Nicole Elizabeth Barnes

Associate Professor of History, Duke Global Health Institute Affiliate

Nicole Elizabeth Barnes is Associate Professor of History and Gender, Sexuality and Feminist Studies. Her first book is open-access; you can read it here. She’s currently working on a second book on the history of nightsoil and toilets in modern China; you can read about this here. She teaches courses on the history of Chinese medicine, the history of global health, the global history of medicine, and the history of modern China. She’s currently teaching the history of global health in the Global Health Focus Program. She adores cats but her husband is allergic to them so she’s suffering from severe feline deprivation, as is her adorable son. She is passionate about social justice, women’s rights, racial equity, and caring for our ailing planet. ​
